Our story

In 2019 the Dr. Daniël De Coninck Fund managed by the King Baudouin Foundation, convened 26 stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. Participants, ranging from academia, healthcare, ethics, and technology sectors, collaborated for nine months to create a framework to guide technology development and use at all stages. The outcome was the articulation of eight guiding principles for caring technology. These principles serve as a roadmap for technology-driven initiatives aimed at improving people's health and quality of life.

Integrating caring technology into healthcare

In today's healthcare landscape, technology plays an important role in delivering personalized and effective care. From fall-prevention sensors to telehealth consultations and wearable health monitors, technology offers many solutions. However, with the vast amount of data collected, concerns arise regarding privacy, consent, literacy, equity, and inclusion. Addressing these issues is crucial to ensure technology effectively meets people's health and well-being needs.

Navigating ethical frameworks

Despite the emergence of ethical technology assessment frameworks over the past two decades, consensus on guiding values and implementation safeguards remains elusive.

Critical questions persist: What values should drive technological health innovation? How can these principles translate into tangible technological solutions? Establishing support systems for responsible innovation processes and tool evaluation is imperative.

Crafting a principles-based framework

Recognizing the urgent need for consistency, the Dr. Daniël De Coninck Fund initiated the development of a comprehensive framework. This initiative aimed to provide guidance across all stages of technology development, implementation, and usage, ensuring innovations in healthcare prioritize data security, equity, participatory governance, quality assurance, and trustworthiness.
