What is Hack Healthcare?
First launched in March 2020, Hack Healthcare is the annual 2-day hackathon organised by Hack Belgium Labs to bring the entire ecosystem of Belgian healthcare innovators together to work on critical problems and develop solutions.
We work with our partners, stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem, dedicating a few months prior to identify, validate and refine a challenge to present. In total, eight to twelve challenges are presented each year to ‘hack’ together. Challenges are organised in four focus themes, this 4th edition Hack Healthcare 2024 focused on Screening and Prevention, Enhancing Patient Experience, Real-world Evidence and Secondary Use of Healthcare Data, and Ecosystem Collaboration for Social Impact.
Our aim is to have representatives of all stakeholders of the Belgian healthcare ecosystem: patients, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, technology companies, healthcare practitioners, governmental organisations, healthcare innovation clusters, organisations working on healthcare.
The Link between Hack Healthcare hackathon and the 8 CTPs:
Innovation in healthcare only makes sense if it benefits patients and citizens' health. Raising awareness and promoting the use of the 8 Caring Technology Principles (CTPs) within healthcare technology innovation fits nicely into Hack Healthcare open innovation. It is common to see a solution or technology developed, including in healthcare, driven by the technical aspects of the development.
Teams use the 8 CTPs to enrich the solutions they’re developing.

However, it's crucial to remember that patients are central to this process, making the ethics and ethos of patient care - and adherence to the 8 CTPs - integral to healthcare technology development.
As our long-term goal is to promote innovation to transform Belgian healthcare, we recognise that it is essential to promote the use of the 8 CTPs. Our intention in bringing the 8CTPs to the solution-development process during the hackathon is to build awareness that goes beyond the event to become an essential component of everyday work in healthcare innovation and healthcare technology development process.
Patients are the centre of our hackathon.
This year, over 80% of the members or partners were already aware of the CTPs. Moving forward, we believe that continuous collaboration of healthcare innovators at our events will help advance awareness and adoption of the Caring Technology Principles.
What are the main challenges we face?
The main challenge is trying to implement all 8 of the CTPs. The hackathon is the culmination of 6-9 months of work on a 2 day innovation event so it is impossible for the participants to keep all CTPs in mind while developing their solution. In fact, we think it is more effective to focus on a couple of the principles.
Prior to the hackathon, together with our partners, we determine which of the CTPs are most relevant to their proposed challenges. The challenges with their corresponding selected principles are presented to the participants. While not every challenge addresses all 8 CTPs, we aim to match each with principles that are relevant and, collectively, have a broad coverage of the CTPs by the teams working at the hackathon.
The hackathon is a compressed event.
